Preventive treatment against HIV must be offered more widely, according to health authorities

PrEP is now mainly prescribed to men who have sex with men with multiple partners.

PrEP, preventive treatment to avoid becoming infected with HIV, should be offered widely to people at risk, and not just to men who have had multiple homosexual relationships, health authorities recommended on Wednesday, November 20. This preventive treatment must be extended “to all situations considered to be at risk of exposure to HIV, regardless of the gender and sexual orientation of the person”according to the High Authority for Health (HAS), in conjunction with the National AIDS Research Agency – Emerging Infectious Diseases (ANRS-MIE), and the National AIDS Council (CNS).

These are new treatment recommendations to prevent and manage HIV infection, of which AIDS is the final stage. Today “almost all prescriptions” of PrEP concern “men who have sex with men (MSM) with multiple partners”note health authorities, calling for expanded treatment.

Furthermore, while almost a quarter of infections are discovered in France at a late stage, it is important to “strengthen targeted and repeated prevention and screening actions in the most exposed populations, while continuing systematic screening in the general population”. “After a sexual exposure accident, a sequence between post-exposure treatment and pre-exposure preventive treatment is recommended”continue these recommendations.
