A case of tuberculosis was detected at the Pasteur campus of the University of Rouen (Seine-Maritime). Information confirmed to us by the Regional Health Agency (ARS), Tuesday November 19, 2024. “A case of contagious tuberculosis has been reported in a person who attended the faculty of Rouen, Pasteur site”tells us the ARS.

According to our information, it is a student. Some students were summoned for a “obligatory meeting” Monday November 18, 2024, carried out by nurses from the Rouen University Hospital to warn students.

An investigation carried out by the Anti-Tuberculosis Center (CLAT) of Seine-Maritime allowed the identification ofaround sixty contacts among the students and around ten among the teachers. Information was provided by the CLAT teams in order to suggest the implementation of screening.

“This screening is based on carrying out a chest x-ray to be carried out now to look for tuberculosis disease, and on a blood test to be carried out at the beginning of January 2025 to identify possible latent forms”specifies the ARS.

“People in contact with the case do not have to put in place specific barrier measures apart from the recommended measures in the event of respiratory symptoms”continues the ARS. CLAT 76 is in charge of the epidemiological investigation and monitoring of contact persons.

Tuberculosis is an infectious disease caused by bacteria that most often affects the lungs. It is transmitted from person to person through the air, from respiratory forms of the disease.

It is an illness that can usually last for several months. This disease exists in two forms, non-contagious latent tuberculosis (LTBI) and potentially contagious tuberculosis disease.

Tuberculosis is less contagious than diseases like the flu or measles. Transmission usually requires prolonged, close contact in a confined environment, which can range from 8 hours to several dozen hours of contact depending on the degree of contagiousness of the sick person. Not all people in contact with a case of tuberculosis will therefore be systematically ill.

Antibiotic treatment is available to treat cases of latent tuberculosis and tuberculosis disease.

As a reminder, tuberculosis is a notifiable disease: any case of tuberculosis must be reported to ARS Normandie.

Each year, between 4,000 and 5,000 cases of tuberculosis are declared in France (source Weekly Epidemiological Bulletin – tuberculosis surveillance in France 2024). In Normandy, 156 cases of tuberculosis were declared in 2022, including 75 in Seine-Maritime (source SpF – Géodes).
