“A new weapon to fight cancer” at the Sainte-Anne clinic in

The clinic in , an establishment of the Saint-Vincent hospital group, is now equipped with a new robot to better treat cancers, the Cyberknife S7. This is the first equipment of this type in Alsacethere are around fifteen in – the closest until now was in .

It makes it possible to treat patients, suffering for example from lung or brain tumors, with sessions that are much more effective and more targeted than standard radiotherapy, explains Doctor Youssef Tazi, oncologist at Sainte-Anne: “This machine makes it possible to deliver very high doses in a very concentrated manner, since it can rotate with an articulated arm all around the patient and deliver the rays to several locations, sparing the surrounding tissues.

Another advantage: “monitor certain tumors that are moving and continue to deliver radiotherapy” – as lung tumors that move with breathing. The Cyberknife can also reach difficult locations, tumors.misplaced“. “When there are several metastases in the brain for example, instead of treating the entire brain, we can treat several at the same time while sparing healthy tissues.“, specifies Doctor Tazi.

A tool in operation since June

The machine also improves patient comfort: “Since we can deliver many doses, we need fewer sessions, where radiotherapy is often spread over several weeks.” The Cyberknife has been operating since June in Sainte-Anne, where around fifteen patients have been treated. Ultimately, Doctor Tazi estimates he can treat 200 patients per year or more.

The tool itself cost 3 million eurosbut it required a new building to accommodate it. The Saint Vincent hospital group therefore took the opportunity to design a new consultation platform for oncology, radiotherapy and soon adapted physical activity. The total investment is therefore 10 million euros.
