Since September 1, 2024, the Le Mans hospital center (CHM) has opened a service specifically dedicated to the diagnosis and monitoring of autoimmune diseases. A rare specialty outside university hospitals.

A service to monitor autoimmune diseases

This new service allows the monitoring and management of autoimmune diseases, in other words diseases that result from an dysfunction of the immune system. This results in a turnaround of white blood cells and antibodies, normally protective, against the body.

Lupus, Sjögren’s syndrome, ITP, systemic sclerosis, immune deficiencies and sickle cell disease are among these rare diseases.

A cross-disciplinary specialty

This department has two full-time doctors: Dr. Paul Legendre, head of the department, and Dr. Jean-Philippe Coindre, nephrologist.

Doctor Pierre Lozac’h, head of the internal and multipurpose medicine department, and his team are also involved in the care of patients in the day hospital and in consultations. Symptoms are studied in a manner multidisciplinary.

Some patients can be months or years in diagnostic wandering, which is psychologically difficult to live with. We are increasingly confronted with these problems, in particular due to the increase in anti-cancer immunotherapies but also the pollution of environments which have an effect on the development of autoimmune diseases.

“Be followed as much as possible on site”

This service aims to “enable patients suffering from a rare pathology to be followed as much as possible on sitein , and to reduce travel, which is costly and energy-consuming in order to have appropriate follow-up,” according to Doctor Paul Legendre.

Doctors can request advice for their patient using the medical advice hotline.

Currently, the hospital’s clinical immunology department is participating in around ten studies of clinical research national or international.
