Six patients who received organ transplants in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Braziltested positive for the virus like (HIV). The alert was issued by a previously healthy patient who began showing symptoms. He reported being HIV positive after a transplant. The tests carried out revealed that he was a carrier of HIVwhich led to further investigation. The results showed that two donors, who were tested by a private laboratory, were actually infected.
Brazilian health authorities have suspended the activities of the PCS Lab Saleme laboratory, responsible for the faulty tests. New tests will also be carried out on the organs that have been analyzed by this laboratory. Additionally, an urgent audit of Rio de Janeiro’s transplant system has been ordered.
Between 2007 and June 2023, nearly 500,000 Brazilians contracted HIV, according to Health Ministry data.
