The French are living longer and longer – LINFO.re

Life expectancy continues to increase in , reaching 79.4 years on average in 2022, but the pace of this aging has slowed down.

L’extension of lifespan in France demonstrates improvements in health and well-being. This phenomenon, spectacular in the last century, today seems to be reaching its limits.

Longevity record in France

In 2022, the French reached a new milestone: the average age at death stood at 79.4 years, a few months more than in 2021. This constant increase inlife expectancyalthough less rapid than in the last century, reflects advances in health and prevention.

However, this trend cannot continue indefinitely. A recent American study, published in the journal Nature Agingemphasizes that the slowdown ofextension of life is a reality in developed countries. Researchers believe that the room for progress is now limited and that humanity may have reached a plateau in terms of life expectancy.

What are the main causes of death?

Tumors still represent a major public health issue, particularly affecting people aged 65 to 84. Cardiovascular diseases follow closely, particularly among those over 85. Respiratory diseases and external causes, such as accidents or suicides, complete this picture. Covid-19, although present, is in fourth position among causes of death.
