This Lot village relies on bats to get rid of tiger mosquitoes

The municipality of Prayssac (Lot) has decided to install bat nest boxes in its public spaces. An unusual and natural solution to get rid of tiger mosquitoes which make life impossible for the inhabitants of the town.

Install bat boxes to combat tiger mosquitoes. This is the natural solution found by the town of Prayssac (Lot), determined to get rid of these pests which are invading the village. As reported Actu Lot Friday October 4, it was a resident who launched the idea by responding to the city’s call for participatory projects.

Why bats? Because, according to studies, they can ingest an average of 400 mosquitoes per day after detecting them using their ultrasound system. Around thirty nest boxes are being manufactured but, in total, around a hundred should be installed in the village. Residents will be able to benefit from them free of charge and install them in their garden.

Carrier of diseases

Since 2004, the tiger mosquito has become widely established in , particularly in the south. In , all departments are affected by this invasion, indicates the ARS Occitanie on its website. If this pest can annoy residents with its bites, it also carries many diseases such as chikungunya, dengue fever and even zika.

To combat the spread of these viral diseases, it is important to eliminate the nests which are mainly found in clear water retention areas. People traveling to risk areas should also follow precautionary principles, such as using repellents or mosquito nets.
