More than one in five inhabitants is obese in Charente: why this scourge is gaining ground

Obesity is gaining ground in Charente. More than one in five residents is obese and more than one in two Charentais residents are overweight, according to data from the Regional Health Agency relayed by Free Charente Wednesday October 2.

The main reason remains the lack of activity, exacerbated by the use of screens. Added to this are taking medications, poor eating habits, social isolation, and mental health disorders.

No restrictive diet

Men are most affected by obesity but the share of women is increasing. An increase which could be explained in particular by “the development of diseases and treatments linked to them such as polycystic ovary syndrome or endometriosis”, according to a dietician from Cognac interviewed by our colleagues. Children are not spared, underlines an old ARS study. Between 2021 and 2022, one in five middle school students was overweight.

More and more overweight people are seeking bariatric surgery to escape this spiral. Specialists also point out that restrictive diets are synonymous with failure. “Losing ten kilos in two weeks is no guarantee of long-term results,” insists one of them. A frustration-free dietary change and regularity are the keys to reducing your BMI.
