Health Canada approves new version of Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine

Health Canada has authorized Moderna’s new COVID-19 vaccine, which protects against currently circulating variants of the virus.

The mRNA vaccine, called Spikevax, has been reformulated to target Omicron’s KP.2 strain. It will replace the previous version of the vaccine, released a year ago, which targeted Omicron’s XBB.1.5 variant.

Health Canada recently asked provinces and territories to discard their old COVID-19 vaccines to ensure the most recent vaccine is used during the respiratory virus season this fall.

Health Canada is also reviewing two other updated COVID-19 vaccines but has not yet authorized them. They are Pfizer’s Comirnaty, which is also an mRNA vaccine, and Novavax’s protein-based vaccine.
