this cult character will not be in the sequel to Romulus (and so much the better)

The director Fede Álvarez shut down a rumor about the sequel toAlien : Romuluswhich refers above all to a desire of Ridley Scott before him, at the time of Prometheus.

Life is beautiful for Alien. Alien : Romulus was a big hit at the box office (more than 350 million, for a budget of 80 million), the studio has already validated a sequel with Fede Álvarez, and the film even won a Oscar nomination for best visual effectsparticularly in the face of Dune: Part Two et Planet of the Apes: The New Kingdom. Which is a little ironic since the director had actually modified certain effects shots after the cinema release, after having obtained a small additional budget in order to improve them.

Knowing that the series Alien : Earth will arrive this year on Disney+, and the studio is already thinking about a new Alien vs Predatorthe xenos factory is officially reopened. It was Ridley Scott’s plan with Prometheusbut the non-success ofAlien : Covenant in 2017 had put the brakes on its prequel saga ambitions, buried for good when Disney bought the 20th Century Fox studio in 2019.

And precisely, Fede Álvarez stopped dead the rumor surrounding the return of a character obviously essential to the saga. An idea that Ridley Scott had in mind, and which apparently will not be recycled (for the moment..?).

ALIEN, THIS RETURN

It was on Twitter (yes yes we know, X) that the rumor reappeared. Specializing in more or less verified scoops, Daniel Richtman shared:

“For the next Alien movie, they are considering bringing back Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) using rejuvenation technology. »

Fede Álvarez then took the trouble to respond himself to deny:

“Fun rumor. But absolutely not true. »

This could be just another wild rumor, but this idea doesn’t come out of nowhere. Ridley Scott himself spoke about this project at the time of Prometheus et Alien : Covenant.

ALIEN, ITS RESURRECTION

When he put his hands back in the saga Alien with PrometheusRidley Scott saw things big. He wanted a saga of prequelscomposed of several episodes on the origins of xenomorphs. After the success of Prometheus (more than 400 million for an official budget of around 120 million), and after having participated in killing the project Alien 5 by Neill Blomkamp, he dreamed of several sequels in addition toAlien : Covenant in order to achieve a goal: reconnecting to the very first film.

In 2015, he explained to The Hollywood Reporter :

“After Alien: Covenant, there will be another and then another, which will gradually return to the 1979 film through the back door. »

And it is for this reason that the return of Ellen Ripley was in the back of his mind, as he explained on video in a Q&A session on Instagram in 2017, when he was asked if he considered rejuvenating Sigourney Weaver :

“We’re heading towards the first Alien so it could be doable. Ripley is going to have to be someone’s daughter. We arrive through the back door. […] I think we’re probably still two films away from being able to consider him appearing. »

Given that Ridley Scott is still producer of the sagathatAlien : Romulus did not deny Prometheus et Alien : Covenant since this part of the mythology was integrated into the story, and another character from the first film had just returned thanks to the visual effects, there would be nothing surprising to see this old idea recycled. But won’t be in the next movie. So Ripley can continue to sleep peacefully – for now.
