Jule is immediately presented as an irresponsible mother. At the wheel of her station wagon, she gets flashed, before leaving her three children to their own devices in a restaurant in a gloomy industrial zone, where they don’t even have enough to afford a soda each. . She has “five minutes” but doesn’t come back. Watching over her little brothers, Claire resolves to return with them on foot, notably crossing a highway. Jule will only return at night. The next day, as if to make amends, she exempts them from school and takes them to a house for sale, promising them that they will move there soon. A real estate agent arrives, she makes them go out the window by blatantly lying to them.
The Courageous is the first feature film by Jasmin Gordon, a Swiss-American director who studied literature and photography in the United States and France before obtaining a master’s degree in documentary filmmaking at Stanford. Filmed in Bas-Valais, a region already at the heart of two bitter family dramas by Ursula Meier (The Child from Above2012; The Line2022), it offers a tenuous narrative, like a snapshot in the life of a single-parent family on the brink of the abyss. Jule, who trained as an accountant, convinces herself that everything will be fine, while we see her ready to implode, worn down by past mistakes and bad decisions.
