This former football star rewarded for his commitment to children: “There are more children in need and in danger”

At the World Economic Forum in Davos, David Beckham received the prestigious Crystal Award for his two decades of philanthropic commitment. The former footballer and UNICEF ambassador recalled the importance of defending the rights of children, particularly those of girls.

David Beckham was honored at the Crystal Award ceremony, organized by the Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship, chaired by Hilde Schwab. This distinction rewards personalities engaged in social and humanitarian causes. Alongside the former British footballer, Belgian fashion designer Diane von Fürstenberg and Japanese architect Riken Yamamoto were also recognized.

In his speech, David Beckham said he was “deeply honored” by this recognition, emphasizing that his philanthropic work with UNICEF did not resemble a traditional profession: “This job is a privilege. It has taken me around the world, introduced me to new communities, and opened my eyes to the challenges facing children around the world.

Vulnerable children, a priority

For more than twenty years, David Beckham has been actively involved in defending children’s rights as a UNICEF ambassador. He expressed his concern about the increase in the number of children at risk around the world: “The sad truth is that today, more than ever, the world is a very difficult place for children. There are more children in need and at risk today than at any time in recent history. It is always the most vulnerable who face the greatest challenges, especially girls.

The former football player also spoke about his personal motivation as a father: “I want my daughter Harper to have the same opportunities as her brothers. Being a girl shouldn’t determine what you can do, where you can go, or who you can become.” According to him, today’s 600 million adolescent girls represent a promising generation of future leaders and innovators.

Thanks to this simple dress, I was able to share confidence with millions of women around the world.”

The Crystal Award, presented as part of the World Economic Forum, celebrates each year personalities who put their notoriety at the service of humanitarian causes. The 2025 edition of the forum, which takes place in the Swiss ski resort of Davos, highlights initiatives for a more inclusive and sustainable world.
