Rare but serious, bacterial meningitis killed one person, a man, in Martinique. The death that occurred yesterday forced the ARS to take a certain number of measures to prevent the spread of the disease.
As soon as the diagnosis was confirmed, ARS Martinique reacted quickly by implementing several coordinated actions:
– In-depth epidemiological investigation: A contact tracing operation was initiated to identify people who had been in close contact with the victim in the ten days preceding the appearance of symptoms. These individuals are referred for medical consultations to assess their exposure and, if necessary, receive preventive treatment.
-Awareness raising among health professionals: Health establishments and doctors in the region have been alerted to reinforce their vigilance and guarantee rapid treatment of any new suspected cases.
– Treatment and follow-up: People identified as contacts receive medical monitoring and, if necessary, antibiotic treatment to prevent the onset of the disease.
A rare but deadly disease
Bacterial meningitis, the cause of this tragedy, is a severe infection that can progress quickly if not treated in time. Its symptoms include high fever, severe headache, vomiting and neck stiffness.
-The bacteria responsible is transmitted through respiratory secretions, particularly during coughing. Although its contagiousness is low, the risk mainly concerns relatives who have had close contact with the sick person.
