A total of 65 Mpox deaths were recorded in 2024 in South Kivu. With 770 suspected cases to date, the province remains the epicenter of monkeypox in the DRC, the provincial health ministry said Wednesday, January 15.

Of the 34 health zones in South Kivu, 33 are affected by Mpox. The Miti-Murhesa health zone comes first, followed by that of Nyantende.

As for the year 2024, we closed with more than 19,000 cases, around 19,786 cases. We lost at least 65 people. Compared to 2024, there were still some people cured, which is encouraging, plus 18,500 cured“, detailed Dr Claude Bahizire, communications officer at the provincial health division.

However, according to him, in all health zones, the curve has changed shape, there is still a reduction in the number of patients.

The provincial ministry of health will continue with efforts in the care of patients to review the downward trend in 2025, Dr. Bahizire also announced:

“Overall with the cases of patients where we do laboratory examinations in any case the Mpox is confirmed. And we ended up with 75% positivity compared to the number of cases where we did laboratory examinations. There is still a decrease and we hope that this decrease will continue and we can even manage the situation for the year 2025.”
