At least 100 children under the age of one are vaccinated every week in ISP/Bunia and Kizonge IDP sites in Ituri.
According to the medical staff of the Kigonze health center who provided this information on Tuesday, January 14, this enthusiasm is the result of awareness raising which is regularly organized by community relays on the importance of vaccines for the protection of children.
They receive routine vaccinations against various diseases.
The ISP and Kigonze sites currently accommodate around 9,000 children, 50% of whom are under five years old.
Health officials at the Kigonze health center say that about 120 children under the age of one are vaccinated every week against tetanus, whooping cough, hysteria and measles. Some pregnant women also come to this health facility to be vaccinated.
For polio vaccines, teams go door to door in every block at these sites.
Paulette Dhanobi, a displaced woman and mother of six children, settled at the Kigonze site since 2017, says that they regularly receive vaccines, which allows them to be in good health despite the difficult living conditions which accentuate the vulnerability of the children.
However, certain sites composed mainly of women and children in the territory of Djugu are inaccessible for security reasons. This results in the irregularity of vaccination in favor of pregnant women and children under five years old.
