Since the detection of the first indigenous cases of chikungunya in August 2024, a total of 138 cases have been reported in . According to Public Health , dispersion continues, with 38% of cases detected in week 52 being isolated. The transition to an epidemic situation seems very likely in the short term. Since August 23, 2024, 138 cases of indigenous chikungunya have been reported in Reunion. All cases, except one probable case, are confirmed cases, PCR +. For S52, 25 cases were reported and for S01, the provisional total is 10 cases.

We observe an intensification of the circulation of chikungunya in the territory, with
geographical dispersion of concern.

Some of the cases detected are located in the 5 active outbreaks already determined. These centers are those of Ermitage, Grand Bassin, Ligne des 400, Trois Mares and Etang salé les Hauts. The Etang Salé home continues to be very active

geographical dispersion of concern.

Some of the cases detected are located in the 5 active outbreaks already determined. These centers are those of Ermitage, Grand Bassin, Ligne des 400, Trois Mares and Etang salé les Hauts. The Etang Salé home continues to be very active.

However, the proportion of isolated cases increased from 23% in week 51 to 38% in week 52, indicating significant geographic spread.

The pre-epidemic stage has been reached, and the territory could enter an epidemic situation as early as next week.

The relatively moderate magnitude of the number of cases that was observed in weeks 51, 52 and 1 is characteristic of weeks with a public holiday (December 20, December 25 and January 1).

A recovery is expected in the first weeks of the year.

The ARS vector control service has deployed its management measures around all cases.

To date, the health impact remains relatively low; one hospitalization of more than 24 hours was declared.

In this context of indigenous circulation of chikungunya and dengue fever, medical personnel are invited to prescribe as quickly as possible after the onset of symptoms a biological analysis allowing the confirmation or refutation of the diagnosis in any patient who presents with a flu-like syndrome ( with or without joint pain).

Only PCR (to be carried out until D7) allows rapid confirmation diagnosis.
