In 2023, 71,822 people died among the resident population in Switzerland. Cardiovascular diseases remain the most important cause of death (28%), ahead of cancers (24%).
Followed by dementia (9%), respiratory diseases (7%) and external causes such as accidents and acts of violence (6%), according to figures published Monday by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO). For the first time since 2020, Covid-19 (2%) was no longer among the five most common causes of death.
A total of 35,109 men and 36,713 women died in Switzerland, at an average age of 77 and 83 years respectively. Compared to 2019, before the start of the pandemic, we observed a drop in mortality of 3.1% among men and 5.1% among women. The data shows that the risks of death of the Swiss population have returned to their downward trend before the pandemic in 2023.
