Prostate cancer: discussion groups organized to improve patient morale

A first discussion group around prostate cancer was organized in French-speaking Belgium this Monday. It was held at the Saint-Jean clinic. This cancer is the one that affects the most people in Belgium. The discussion groups are organized in collaboration with the non-profit organization “Nous aussi”.

In 2022, 76,220 Belgians received a new cancer diagnosis, including 41,774 men and 34,446 women, according to the Belgian Cancer Registry Foundation. Among men, prostate cancer comes in first place, with 12,699 diagnoses.

In Brussels, 5,586 new cases of cancer were detected. Here, prostate cancer is the second most common, with 828 diagnoses, just behind breast cancer and its 907 diagnoses. Prostate cancer is therefore the one that most affects men in Brussels.

Treatment for this cancer causes many symptoms such as incontinence or erectile dysfunction. It can therefore greatly affect the morale of patients, but also those of their loved ones. This is why they are invited to participate in these discussion groups.

The desire of the non-profit organization “Nous aussi” is to develop the discussion group in the French community. In Flanders, they have existed for 20 years already. The next session should soon be organized at the Saint-Luc clinics.
