How you shake someone’s hand says more about your health than you might imagine. A study published in the scientific journal Elsevier and relayed by Le Parisien on Tuesday November 12 demonstrated a link between the strength of your handshake and cardiovascular disease monitoring.

British scientists analyzed medical data from 76,000 volunteers aged 40 to 69. Gender, lifestyle habits such as alcohol and tobacco consumption, body mass index and origins were taken into account in the analysis.

Their results show that regular physical activity in people who have a grip strength below average reduces the risk of develop cardiovascular disease. This is not the case for people with higher strength.

Researchers suggest that people with greater strength could have need higher intensity or durations longer than current recommendations for physical activity to reduce their risk.
