The Ministry of Agriculture, Water Resources and Fisheries announced on Wednesday the detection of cases of contagious bovine lumpy skin disease in Tunisia. The institution calls on breeders to immediately report any suspicious cases to the regional veterinary services attached to the regional agricultural development commissions.
This viral disease, which exclusively affects cattle without representing any danger to humans, is transmitted by vectors such as flies, mosquitoes, fleas or ticks. The main symptoms include fever and the appearance of nodules of varying sizes on the animals’ skin.
To prevent the spread of the disease, the ministry recommends that breeders:
• Contact a veterinarian as soon as signs suggestive of the disease appear.
• Avoid any treatment without medical advice.
• Strictly enforce biosecurity measures, including cleaning farms, draining stagnant water and removing piles of natural fertilizers.
The ministry also urges breeders to:
– Isolate sick or suspicious animals to protect healthy herds.
– Do not acquire animals of unknown origin.
– Keep animals away from infected areas.
– Fight against vector insects using pesticides recommended by veterinary services
As part of its control plan, the ministry announced the acquisition of vaccines against lumpy skin disease. An exceptional vaccination campaign will be launched soon, upon completion of the necessary administrative procedures, to strengthen prevention and limit the spread of this disease.
