From this Tuesday 12 to this Thursday 14 November 2024the City of Montpellier is organizing a series of events to raise public awareness of diabetes. In collaboration with the Hérault Health Insurance, the Montpellier University Hospital and several local associations, three “Around Diabetes” days will take place in different neighborhoods, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The objective is to offer local prevention and screening actions to reach residents directly where they live.
Diabetes in France: an alarming progression
In 2019, nearly 4 million people in France were identified as diabetic by Health Insurance. This chronic disease is characterized by excess blood sugar, or hyperglycemia, causing increased risks of cardiovascular, renal and ophthalmological complications. Type 2 diabetes represents more than 90% of cases and is growing at a worrying rate, largely due to increasingly sedentary lifestyles and an unbalanced diet.
Type 2 diabetes is in fact closely linked to lifestyle. Lack of physical activity, excessive consumption of sugar and processed foods contribute to the rise in cases. However, solutions exist to prevent this form of diabetes.
These actions will be held successively in the Cévennes (November 12), Gambetta (November 13) and Lemasson (November 14) districts, to guarantee maximum coverage and reach a wide audience. The days revolve around educational workshops and prevention actions: information on diabetes, access to rights and the Sophia Health Insurance program, blood sugar tests and screening for chronic complications.
An action to raise awareness among the general public
These three days of action are primarily aimed at the general public. The workshops offered aim to inform and prevent the risks of diabetes in an accessible way. Thanks to Ma.P, the mobile health prevention unit in Montpellier, participants will be able to benefit from educational activities on nutrition and workshops on physical activity. Particular emphasis is placed on oral health with the “Montpellier Oral Health” program, because diabetes also has an impact on this sphere.
For people already living with diabetes, specific help is also provided. The DIABSAT truck, deployed by the Diabète Occitanie association, will be on site to offer free screenings for chronic complications linked to diabetes. This mobile tool makes it possible to detect health problems associated with diabetes, such as cardiac, ophthalmological or renal complications, without requiring significant travel for patients.
