Nearly 31,000 deaths each year
“Like all the members of the ‘Together we lungs’ collective, I remain mobilized on the issue of individual lung cancer screening before organized screening is deployed in France, as is already the case with some of our European neighbors. Cancer of lung remains the leading cause of cancer death in our country (nearly 31,000 deaths per year: Editor’s note)“, specifies Professor Sébastien Couraud, in a press release from the collective.
This screening is recommended for all people aged 50 to 74 who smoke heavily. The objective of these experts is also to raise awareness of early detection, since it is “often diagnosed at a late stage“, the press release said.
Furthermore, a call for applications has been launched by the National Cancer Institute (INCA) to establish a national organized lung cancer screening program in France. “General practitioners and pharmacists could play an important role in this targeted screening for lung cancer, and their mission of advice and delivery of substitutes nicotine, among others“, adds Mr. Jean-Pierre Lassaigne, president of the Lyon association De l’Air.
