Being part of the World Stroke Day the Victor-Jousselin hospital center in Dreux (Eure-et-Loir) is organizing a day of awareness, prevention and action to save lives Tuesday November 5, 2024.
The Dreux hospital center is mobilizing to raise awareness among the general public about Cerebral Vascular Accident (CVA), its diagnosis and its treatment. A pathology which constitutes a major medical emergency.
Stroke: a vital emergency and a public health issue
There are two types of Stroke:
- One occurs when a blood vessel in the brain becomes blocked (ischemic strokerepresenting 80% of cases);
- The other when the vessel ruptures (Hemorrhagic stroke20% of cases).
In France, approximately 150 000 AVC occur every year, either one every 4 minutes! Stroke is the leading cause of disability acquired in adults and second cause of dementia after Alzheimer’s disease.
It is essential to remember that a quarter of strokes affect people under the age of 65. Globally, one person suffers a stroke every five seconds. The World Health Organization (WHO) considers this pathology a pandemic, with an incidence projected at 23 million cases in 2030, compared to 16 million in 2005.
Rapid care: a vital necessity
Faced with the potentially serious consequences of stroke, early treatment is
crucial for limit functional after-effects.
Current treatments, such as intravenous thrombolysis (injection of a medicine that dissolves the clot to restore blood flow) or mechanical thrombectomy (surgical procedure during which a device is inserted into an artery to directly remove the clot), helps restore blood flow to the brain in the event of an ischemic stroke.
However, it is important to note that not all patients are eligible for these treatments, particularly due to ongoing treatments or medical history.
Recognizing the signs of a stroke when every minute counts
Faced with the appearance of sudden neurological symptoms :
- A paralyzed face,
- An inability to lift an arm or a leg,
- Speech disorders,
- Vision problems…
It is imperative to react quickly by dialing 15. Every minute counts to reduce the risk of serious after-effects.
Support structures in the department
The department has two Neuro-Vascular Intensive Care Units (NICU): Dreux and Chartres.
The USINV of Dreux takes care of patients from the Drouais basin and is a referral center for hospitals in Nogent-le-Rotrou, The Magnifying Glass et The Eagle (Orne).
The awareness campaign of the Dreux Hospital Center
On November 5, 2024, the neurology department of the hospital center organizes in the hall
welcome a stroke awareness campaign.
This initiative aims to inform the public about risk factors, warning signs, treatment protocols, and strategies for living better after a stroke. The objective is to “ deconstruct certain preconceived ideas and improve the understanding of this disease.
A well-aware population is a population that manages itself better. This day will raise awareness among the population, improve the speed of treatment, and offer the best chance of recovery to stroke patients.
