While November 1 marks the start of “tobacco-free month,” researchers have compiled the results of more than 400 studies on the effectiveness of the measures put in place to limit the prevalence of smoking.

Throughout the world, smoking remains the main enemy of man. The leading cause of preventable mortality, it is responsible for 75% of deaths worldwide, including 13% in , or 75,000 deaths per year. On the occasion of the launch of the 2024 edition of Tobacco-Free Month, this November 1, it is clear that progress is notable, in part thanks to anti-tobacco policies. In any case, this is the main conclusion of a study which synthesized knowledge on the effect of these strategies, by comparing the results of 476 scientific works in different countries. This meta-analysis was the subject of a publication in the journal Nature Human Behavior at the beginning of October. “This is one of the rare studies which, in a remarkable way, summarizes the effect of all of these strategies rather than targeting one in particular.“, immediately underlines Dr Hervé Martini, addictologist and secretary general of the Addictions… association.
