Pink October, as its name suggests, is mainly in October. The annual global communications campaign designed to raise awareness among women of breast cancer screening and fundraising therefore comes to an end. But it will not be too late to detect tumors in the Gers, thanks to the Mammobile…

The Departmental Health Center launched this system with the support of the ARS. It is a mobile mammography unit which will travel across the department in November and December.

X-ray and breast palpation

“This ambitious project reflects the desire to make breast cancer screening accessible to all, and is part of a collective prevention strategy, particularly for women residing in remote rural areas,” argues the Department.

This high-tech equipment, mounted on a semi-trailer, is equipped with a mammograph and a consultation room, allowing women to carry out an x-ray and breast palpation on site. It will be piloted by radio technicians, as well as by doctors and midwives. of the Departmental Health Center and the Sexual Health Center. Women aged 50 to 74for whom breast cancer screening every two years is strongly recommended, are at the heart of this system.

Pooling with Ariège

An initiative also made possible thanks to… Ariège. The operation is in fact shared with the Ariège Prévention Mobile Association.

“The overall screening participation rate is 61.6% in Gers with much lower rates in certain communities of municipalities. The establishment of a mammobile, jointly with Ariège and Aude, is a necessity and aims to improve access to screening mammography for all eligible women far from any radiology practice. The ARS proposed to the Territorial Health Center run by the Gers Departmental Council to deploy the Mammobile, as an extension of its action to provide access to care.”

Nadia Benoit
President of the Gers League Against Cancer committee.

“Breast cancer remains the most common cancer in women, it represents a little more than a third of female cancers. It can be detected when it is small (less than one centimeter in diameter) thanks to mammography carried out as part of regular follow-up and thus increase the chances of recovery, while benefiting from less heavy treatments and less mutilating surgery, and avoiding chemotherapy if necessary,” explains Nadia Benoit.
