Nouméa: at the former CHT, visit to the advanced medical post

Set up the day after the first evening of riots, the advanced medical post is located in the premises of the former CHT Gaston-Bourret. The staff present there takes care of emergency cases, in response to current traffic difficulties.

It was one of the government’s first responses to the riots that occurred on the night of May 14: the installation, at the entrance to the city center, of an advanced medical post. As traffic is hampered in multiple places in Nouméa – notably on the Sav express, the main artery leading to the Médipôle – this new structure is intended to be a reception point for cases of medical emergencies, with a view, if necessary, to rapid evacuation to the Médipôle.

So far, around fifty patients have been received in the advanced medical post, including four in absolute emergency while one person unfortunately died.

On site, where around twenty people can easily be accommodated on site at the same time (four absolute emergencies simultaneously), several healthcare personnel – private as well as hospital staff – ensure the reception of patients. But first, the first step is to “categorize patients according to whether they are in absolute emergency or relative emergency”, explained Christian Decanlers, chief medical officer of New Caledonia’s civil security, during a visit organized for the press on Tuesday. While the first case mainly refers to patients “whose hemorrhage is not controlled and can lead to death”“relative emergencies” refer to people not requiring urgent care, and having the possibility of waiting with health personnel, while absolute emergency cases are taken care of.

Three births on site

In parallel with these two cases, “general medicine” is also practiced, encompassing common pathologies, the care of patients who have stopped treatment, or the reception of expectant mothers. Which also have the possibility of giving birth on site. “Since the establishment of the medical post, we have had three children born here; Abigaëlle, Manson and Gauthier”, informs Christian Decanlers. Deliveries carried out in close collaboration with the Samu. “The idea is that, if we do not have certainty that the route to the Magnin clinic or the Médipôle is safe, we cannot take the risk of sending these people on the road. […] Of course, it is better that the birth takes place in the hospital, but here, we are in a particular situation, so if we cannot go safely to the hospital even though we have everything that we have to here, we do it here. Afterwards, it is clear that if we have the slightest sign that a delivery is at risk, then we bring in a helicopter, and immediately the patient is evacuated.”, explains the doctor.

Anyone wondering where to go in the event of a medical problem can always contact 15 directly. This number will allow them to find the nearest medical facility, whether it is the advanced medical post or not. It is also possible to go directly to the former CHT Gaston-Bourret.
