What is superficial pyoderma?

Quite common in dogs, rare in cats, it is a skin infection by a bacteria (Staphylococcus pseudintermedius). Animals less than a year old are most affected. This germ is naturally present on the animal’s skin, but it only becomes truly annoying in the event of a wound, irritation or sting, giving it the opportunity to enter and multiply. Small pimples of pus then appear, sometimes a moth-eaten appearance of the hair at the trunk, redness (with circular crusts and a grayish center), etc.

How to treat superficial pyoderma?

To rid the animal of them, the veterinarian prescribes oral antibiotics, generally over three weeks, as well as local treatments: shampoos, antibiotic ointments. He ensures that the animal does not have an underlying condition (an immune deficiency for example), especially in the event of a recurrence. There is no risk of contagion for its owner, unless the latter shows a drop in immunity. In this case, it is best to avoid any physical contact.
