The authorities in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) launched the vaccination campaign against Mpox (monkey pox) on Saturday, we learned from a media source.

The start of this first phase of vaccination, aimed at immunizing 48,000 people, was given by the chief of staff of the Minister of Health, in Goma, in the east of the DRC, specifies Radio Okapi, the radio of the United Nations in the country.

This campaign will focus first on the most affected areas of the North Kivu province, namely Goma, Karisimbi and Nyiragongo, from October 7 to 10, specifies Radio Okapi.

And note that for three days, this campaign will target the most vulnerable groups, in particular health personnel, war displaced people, as well as agents at entry and control points.

Initially scheduled for October 2, the vaccination campaign against Mpox in the DRC was finally postponed to Saturday October 5.

As a reminder, in mid-August, the World Health Organization (WHO) triggered its highest level of international health alert in the face of the resurgence of Mpox cases in Africa.

“Today, the emergency committee met and informed me that in its opinion, the situation constitutes a public health emergency of international concern. I accepted this opinion,” declared, during at a press conference, WHO Director-General, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

According to the WHO, the Democratic Republic of Congo is the most affected country in the region, experiencing multiple Mpox outbreaks due to different strains of the virus.
