Inaugurated on April 30, the new oncology-radiotherapy and neuro-radiosurgery center of the Hospices Civils de Lyon has been operational since January 2024.

Located near the Pierre Wertheimer hospital in Bron and connected to it by an aerial gallery, this building of almost 1,500 m2 complements the already existing care offering at the Lyon Sud hospital (four particle accelerators and the first Linac Elekta Unity MRI in France). The Bron center includes two latest generation particle accelerators and a Gamma Knife, the first installed in Auvergne Rhône-Alpes.

Operating in the brain without opening the skull

Dedicated to neuro-radiosurgery, this cutting-edge device makes it possible to operate in the brain without opening the skull and to treat small tumors (less than 3 cm) or those located in deep regions of the brain, previously inoperable. More than 350 patients have already benefited from the Gamma Knife present in only four university hospitals in France.

The total cost of the investment (works + equipment) amounts to 19.5 million euros. 800 to 900 patients will be treated with radiotherapy in the new center each year.
