“Clinical studies on the effects of kombucha still remain very limited,” explains nutritionist Hibatoullah Belmoudden. “The few studies carried out certainly show interesting results, but they generally relate to very small samples, which makes them unrepresentative.”

In reality, the qualities attributed to kombucha are based mainly on consumer testimonials and empirical theories. “It’s a bit the same phenomenon as for vegetable charcoal or turmeric, where the benefits are largely overrated,” adds the expert.

Beyond these amazing claims, the nutritional profile of kombucha also needs to be nuanced. Certainly, this fermented drink contains organic acids, antioxidants and probiotics, which can have positive effects.

In addition, it contains a “good” amount of sugar, from the fermentation of tea and added sugar. “Although this sugar is natural, it is nonetheless important to remain vigilant about the quantities consumed,” specifies the nutritionist.

Additionally, the caffeine content of kombucha, which comes from the base tea, may be problematic for people who are sensitive or already consume a lot of caffeinated drinks.

In the end, if kombucha can indeed provide some benefits, we should not attribute exaggerated virtues to it either. As with any food, moderation and common sense remain essential. Priority should be given to a balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle, rather than the search for a miracle cure.
