As usual, Rory McIlroy did not shirk his responsibilities and appeared before the press to discuss the way he played the final holes of the BMW PGA Championship.

Rory, how do you feel after coming so close again, a week after letting victory slip away in Ireland?

RORY McILROY: You know, last week was tough, but I came away with my head held high. That showed in the way I played the 72nd hole trying to make eagle, and then I played the playoff holes perfectly, really, with two birdies.

But that just shows the level of the tournament. If you make a small mistake or don’t birdie a crucial hole, there’s always a player waiting to take advantage.

I had my chance in regulation but I found myself with a really difficult distance on my second shot. I tried to curl a 4-iron to the right. I overspinned it and was lucky it didn’t end up in the water.

Two weeks in a row, I feel like I’ve played well. But not well enough. Overall, I’m happy with my game and the direction it’s going. I have a week off now, before I go to the Dunhill Links Championship in two weeks.

The second shot on the 72nd hole, were you between two clubs?

RORY McILROY: I think the 5-wood was too much and I didn’t want to end up behind the green on that hole so I went for a 4-iron. I was aiming for the right bunker trying to get it back to the middle of the green. I just overdid it and it stopped on the edge of the hazard, I’m doing okay.

I could have also done a layup and a wedge like Billy did. But when you’re only 225 yards from the front of the green, you figure you have to give it a shot.

Then I played the two playoff holes very well and especially the 4 iron that I put on the green on the second playoff hole. It was perfect. I made a good putt that just missed the target on the right and Billy made his. That’s what made the difference.
