A column written by Elon Musk for the German newspaper The world caused an uproar in Germany.

In this column, Elon Musk justifies his support for the far-right party Alternative fûr Deutschland (AfD), which he describes as “last spark of hope” for the country.

The article expands on a post that the billionaire, close to Donald Trump, published on his X platform shortly before Christmas.

In this column, Elon Musk writes: “Presenting the AfD as a far-right party is clearly false, considering that Alice Weidel, the party's leader, has a same-sex partner from Sri Lanka! Does that make you think of Hitler? Come on !”

He goes on to explain why he supports the AfD's position on energy, economic recovery and migration, saying the AfD's principles reflect “the principles that made Tesla and SpaceX successful.”

Elon Musk says AfD “represents political realism” rather than extremism.

Shortly after the publication of the column, the editor-in-chief of The worldEva Marie Kogel, announced her resignation on X.

Franziska Zimmerer, journalist at The worldshe published a answer to the article, writing that it had sparked a “discussion intense” within the editorial staff and that “many colleagues opposed its publication.”

Many other journalists from Die Welt also published critiques of the article on article d’opinion.

With Germany's early elections seven weeks away, journalists and politicians are criticizing the timing of the article's publication.

Franziska Zimmerer wrote that unfiltered election calls “have no place in independent media.”
