Sergio Garcia has done what is necessary to be able to join again as a member of the DP World Tour. An approach allows him to be especially selectable for the Ryder Cup.
Sergio Garcia resigned from DP World Tour in May 2023 after a sports arbitration committee validated the sanctions issued by the European Tour office against players who participated without authorization in events on the LIFE Golf.
In fact, this made him ineligible for the duel against the Americans which took place more than a year ago now in Rome, Marco Simone. But the European points record holder has decided to pay his fines – totaling more than £1 million – and serve tournament suspensions before he can re-enter the European Tour in 2025.
He submitted a membership application
This means that he will be eligible for an eleventh participation in Ryder Cup during the confrontation next September at Bethpage Black. « Sergio Garcia submitted his DP World Tour membership application for the 2025 season before the deadline of Sunday, November 17 » confirmed a DP World Tour spokesperson to bunkered.co.uk.
The Spaniard has repeatedly stated that he is not ready to give up his ambition to participate in the Ryder Cup. At the “One Year to Go” press conference held in New York last month, the European captain, Luke Donaldrevealed he had conversations with the now 44-year-old about a possible return.
« He thinks he can play, Donald confirmed.. I don't think he talked to me about an assistant captain position, he wants to play. But once again, he would have to join the Tour to be eligible. He is certainly very interested in this idea. He understands everything that's involved and, again, it's up to him if he's willing to do all of this. But we've had this discussion before. »
Performant
We do not yet know how many DP World Tour events he will be able to compete in, but his very good season on the LIV this year shows that he is a real candidate for the European selection. The winner of the Masters 2017 thus finished third in the general classification of the Saudi circuit, accumulating six top 5s.
However, qualifying for the European team which will travel to the suburbs of New York in September 2025 will not be easy. Europe's new qualifying criteria still do not recognize LIV Golf, which means it will have to achieve very strong results in its rare starts on the DP World Tour and in the possible Majors it plays. Otherwise, El Niño will have to hope to be among Luke Donald's six choices.
His comrades on the same path?
Other members of the circuit supported by the Public Investment Fund (PIF) of Saudi Arabia could be selectable. Jon Rahm et Tyrrell Hatton are currently eligible, pending the outcome of an appeal against the fines imposed on them. They have in fact participated in the minimum four DP World Tour tournaments required to keep their card in 2025.
According to information from the English journalist Matt Chivers, Adrian Meronk, Dean Burmester, Joaquin Niemann, Thomas Pieters, Patrick Reed et Lucas Herbert also submitted their application for DP World Tour membership for the 2025 season.
