The Valley of Fools – Xavier Beauvois

Résumé : Riddled with debt, Jean-Paul (Jean-Paul Rouve) must leave his house. Accompanied by his daughter (Madeleine Beauvois), he returns to the home of his father (Pierre Richard) where the restaurant he runs is located.

Critique : Nothing is going well for Jean-Paul: divorced, angry with his eldest son (Joseph Olivennes), he risks losing his business, not to mention his serious penchant for alcohol. A lifelong sailing enthusiast, he has been participating in a virtual Vendée-Globe race for years. But this time, he will lock himself in his father’s old boat which sits at the bottom of the garden and “live” the race live in conditions as close as possible to reality. At the same time, he will try to get rid of his alcoholism.

The screenplay, co-written by the filmmaker, which nevertheless starts from a fairly thin and not particularly credible premise, still manages to paint for us the moving picture of a man adrift (no pun intended!), who will launching an original challenge, although a little vain, as if by proxy, to restore meaning to your life.

Although Jean-Paul’s “journey” is the main element, the story does not forget all the little funny or moving moments that take place around him. Humor is not absent either, manifested in several tasty little touches (the original appearance of local sponsors in particular). Xavier Beauvois himself participates by giving himself a funny little role as a phlegmatic chef who takes his break in the middle of a gunshot!

If Pierre Richard (surprising) and Madeleine Beauvois (the filmmaker’s daughter) are very accurate, Jean-Paul Rouve is impressive in his difficult and sometimes thankless role as “garden” navigator.

Note the music of Pete Doherty and the friendly presence of “real” navigators Jean Le Cam and Michel Desjoyeaux.
