Italian player suspended 10 matches for comparing opponent to ‘Jackie Chan’

Como footballer Marco Curto was suspended ten matches, five of which were suspended, by FIFA for comparing an opponent, South Korean Hee-chan Hwang, to “Jackie Chan” during a pre-season match in July.

Almost three months after the match between Como and Wolverhampton, FIFA recognized Marco Curto “responsible for discriminatory behavior”. The 25-year-old also received a community service sentence and will have to undergo training in the fight against racism in sport from an approved body.

“Ignore him, he thinks he’s Jackie Chan”

Hwang reported the racist remark, “Ignore him, he thinks he’s Jackie Chan,” which sparked incidents between players from the two teams. Wolverhampton immediately filed a complaint with the English Football Federation, and FIFA was contacted.

“The suspension imposed on the player sends a clear message: racism and discriminatory behavior will not be tolerated either in football or in society,” said Matt Wild, general manager of football operations for Wolves. Since the incident, Marco Curto has been loaned to Serie B, Cesena, during the summer transfer window.
