Ravaged by Hurricane Helene, Florida on alert as another storm approaches

Fear again. Still in shock caused by the powerful Hurricane Helene, which left 14 dead in the state ten days ago, Florida is once again under threat from the elements. The governor declared a state of emergency in 35 counties with the arrival of Tropical Storm Milton.

“We will continue to put in place the State’s resources to prepare for effective search and rescue operations, the restoration of electricity and the clearing of roads,” Republican Ron DeSantis wrote on X.

Most of the passage Tuesday or Wednesday

Tropical Storm Milton, which is currently progressing in the western Gulf of Mexico, “is expected to strengthen into a major hurricane as it moves toward Florida mid-next week,” the national weather agency NWS said, also on X. Early forecasts suggest Milton will likely cross Florida before reaching the Atlantic Ocean, with the National Hurricane Center (NHC) warning of “potentially life-threatening consequences for parts of the west coast of Florida on Tuesday or Wednesday.” .

Milton could, according to its trajectory anticipated by the NHC, spare the American interior, such as the mountains of North Carolina where Hurricane Helene caused serious damage, notably triggering floods. Hélène killed at least 220 people in the southeast of the United States.
