New hurricane called Milton threatens Florida

Florida is not finished with hurricane season. This state in the southeast of the United States will be hit by a cyclone in the middle of next week, according to estimates from the NHC, the American Hurricane Center.

A tropical storm named Milton formed in the Gulf of Mexico on Saturday. While the water surface temperature continues to average 25°C in this region of the world, the phenomenon will rapidly increase. As this NHC map shows, Milton is forecast to become a hurricane overnight this Sunday into Monday.

The strengthening is expected to continue to proceed rapidly. Late Tuesday afternoon, during the night from Tuesday to Wednesday time, Milton would become a so-called major hurricane. According to the Saffir-Simpson scale which serves as a reference for the classification of these meteorological monsters, this means that it will then have reached category 3 out of 5. The winds would then blow at least at 178 km/h on average for one minute with gusts several tens of km/h higher.

As it stands, the NHC anticipates a weakening just before landfall on the southeast coast of Florida. Milton would no longer be a major hurricane late Wednesday afternoon, during the night from Wednesday to Thursday in Paris. It should then cross this part of the territory and come out on the other side, touching the west coast. The governor of Florida has also declared a state of emergency in 35 counties.

This new hurricane comes around ten days after another identical phenomenon affected the same region. At the end of September, Hélène returned inland from the northwest sides of Florida, while impacting the rest of the seaside of this state. 14 people died in Florida, 220 in all in the country.
