A film made for a duo of stars with a real duo of stars.
Where streaming platforms summon big names with waves of dollars for productions as often insipid as they are interchangeable, Apple would at least have had the good idea to set the bar higher, seeking to remind us of a time when bringing together two big Hollywood stars (and friends) coming to have fun together was a guarantee of a real cool event.
Not that “Wolfs” is driven by the craziest premise of the year (two cleaners of the shadows of the lackluster acts of the dominant elite find themselves forced to cooperate despite themselves for one night) or in draws one of the most thrilling and daring stories that we have seen (it even seems to mock the hypothetical ramifications of its plot by transforming them into thoughts delivered out loud by its duo), it is just a showcase of absurd situations perfectly adapted to the humor of his two companions who have fun with a self-deprecation obviously going beyond the simple silhouettes of their characters (especially on age). Even generously giving time to shine to a third, younger thief along the way (Austin Abrams and his underwear), the two actors delight in their nonchalant act in a playful tone allowing the sparks of their complicity, their fantasy to shine through easily. common and this expert knowledge of the comic tempo of his alter ego.
The result is clearly more minor entertainment than anything we experienced in the heyday of “Ocean’s Eleven” (and Jon Watts’ direction is light years below that of a Steven Soderbergh) but this tailor-made action comedy is cut from such a fabric of good humor thanks to actors clearly happy to give each other the reply again that it can only make us smile in their company. And, damn, how cool.
