A controversial statement. Jean-Luc Mélenchon was strongly criticized on social networks, after publishing an extract from his last speech in Mende, Saturday September 28, in Lozère. While Lebanon is under fire from Israeli strikes and the leader of Hezbollah has been killed, the founder of La France insoumise has spoken widely about the conflict shaking the region. And one of his tirades, in which he mentioned Benjamin Haddad, new Minister for European Affairs, was not well received.

“The minister designated to take care of Europe is committed to Mr. Netanyahu’s policies”chanted the former presidential candidate. On X, the reactions were numerous. “To make your point clear, this minister is… Jewish. It’s unworthy”particularly underlined Gérard Araud, diplomat, former French ambassador to Israel and the United States.

Benjamin Haddad already singled out

Jean-Luc Mélenchon also suggested that the delegate minister would not do everything possible to stop the conflict. “However, if Europe decided to no longer deliver European weapons, the war would end. If Europe stopped trade relations, it would not be able to hold on”he explained.

The appointment of Benjamin Haddad, during the constitution of Michel Barnier’s government, had already been singled out by executives of La France insoumise. Some had raised statements in which he maintained that he was not “for a ceasefire” and assured that“Israel has the right to defend itself against Hamas terrorism”.
