Ballots were being counted Sunday afternoon, but the result was in little doubt. Anura Kumara Dissanayake, 55, came out on top in Sri Lanka’s presidential election on Saturday. With 42 percent of the vote, he was 10 points ahead of opposition leader Sajith Premadasa. Dissanayake’s victory came not only from his far-left nationalist party, the JVP, but also from the National People’s Power (NPP), an alliance of 21 civil society groups and trade unions, for which he was the candidate.
