CAN 2025 qualifiers – Togo: Homawoo and Boateng out against Equatorial Guinea

CAN Morocco 2025: As part of the qualifiers for the Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) Morocco 2025, Togo is preparing to face Equatorial Guinea in Malabo. After the reconnaissance of the field this Sunday, the Togolese coach, Daré Nibombé, took stock of the fitness of his players on the eve of this crucial duel.

The Hawks are approaching this 2nd day of qualifying after a frustrating draw (1-1) against Liberia, played at the Kégué stadium. Disappointed by this result, the Togolese must quickly pull themselves together to face an Equatorial Guinea team that will also seek to revive after a defeat (2-0) against Algeria on the first day. The Nzalang Nacional, playing at home, will do everything possible to bounce back in front of its public.

Major absences in defense

For Daré Nibombé and his staff, the stakes are high, especially since two pillars of the defense will be missing. Josué Homawoo and Kennedy Boateng, undisputed starters, are injured and declared forfeit. Despite these notable absences, the Togolese coach remains confident in the abilities of his replacements to ensure the defensive solidity of the team. This Sunday, a video session was organized to correct the errors made during the last match.

A major challenge in Malabo

The match between Equatorial Guinea and Togo will take place this Monday, September 9, at 15:00 GMT, at the Estadio de Malabo. The Hawks, eager to revive their campaign in Group E, will have to show concentration and efficiency in both areas, according to the instructions of their coach.

“I feel very good about my team. We took advantage of yesterday, after the trip, to recover. We have just finished the reconnaissance of the terrain in a good frame of mind. We mainly worked on finishing, an area where we sinned against Liberia,” Daré Nibombé told the press.

He also highlighted the adjustments needed due to injuries: “The only negative is that we lose Homawoo and Boateng. So we will have to rethink the defense. The key to the game will be to be effective in both areas and to stay focused throughout the game.”

The stakes are clear, a victory is imperative for the Hawks if they want to stay in the race for qualification for CAN Morocco 2025.
