In the South American qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup, Brazil lost 0-1 in Paraguay. World champions Argentina also lost 1-2 in Colombia. But it is primarily Brazil that is under pressure.

The Brazilians, with their stars Allison, Rodrygo and Vinicius Jr., lost in Asuncion against Paraguay, against whom they had beaten 4-1 at the Copa America in the summer. The 21-year-old Diego Gomez scored the goal of the day with a wonderful outside-of-the-foot shot after just 20 minutes.

Brazil’s Seleção lost for the fourth time in the eight rounds of this campaign. Brazil has only won one of its last six World Cup qualifiers, the meager 1-0 win against Ecuador last weekend. Brazil fell to fifth place in the rankings. Six teams qualify directly for the 2026 World Cup; the team in seventh place can also qualify via a playoff. The teams in places 4 (Ecuador) to 8 (Bolivia) are separated by just two points.

In the South American top match, Colombia beat Argentina 2-1 in Barranquilla. The Colombians took revenge on the world champions for their defeat in the final of the Copa America in the summer (0-1). Colombia is also the only team in South America to remain undefeated in World Cup qualification (4 wins, 4 draws). However, Argentina (18 points) remains at the top of the table, ahead of Colombia (16) and Uruguay (15).

Yerson Mosquera and Daniel Munoz (with a penalty after VAR intervention) scored the two for Colombia. Nicolas Gonzalez equalized for Argentina in between.
