The news is absolutely sad. A five-day-old baby died on Saturday, August 24 in Oyonnax (Ain), after being bitten on the head by his grandmother’s dog. The events took place at her grandmother’s home.
The animal, a Husky, slipped into a room where the little girl was alone in a bed. “The dog then grabbed the baby before taking her to the living room,” in front of her parents, grandmother, and uncles and aunts, a police source told AFP.
It was the newborn’s father who rushed her to the city’s hospital. She was then airlifted to a hospital in Lyon, where she died.
According to AFP, the dog, which was considered non-dangerous, was placed in a shelter. An investigation has been opened by the Bourg-en-Bresse prosecutor’s office for “involuntary manslaughter by attacking a dog”.
In a bill aimed at better preventing dog bites tabled in 2021, MPs recorded 33 deaths due to dog bites, including sixteen children under five, in 20 years.
