Portugal: Ronaldo’s emotion

Having scored his 900th career goal on Friday evening during Portugal’s victory against Croatia in the Nations League (2-1), a very moved Cristiano Ronaldo does not intend to stop there.

Historic. On Friday night in Lisbon, at the Luz stadium, Portugal dominated Croatia in the opening match of the Nations League (2-1), thanks in particular to Cristiano Ronaldo’s 900th career goal. Diogo Dalot quickly opened the scoring (7th), before “CR7” doubled the lead on a pass from Parisian Nuno Mendes shortly after the half-hour mark (34th). And Dalot then reduced the gap against his own goal (41st). Very moved after this 900th goal, his 131st in the national team, Ronaldo then confided in this figure that he had wanted to “reach for a long time. I knew that I would reach this figure, because as I continue to play, it would happen naturally.”

“Records come naturally”

Before explaining his great emotion. “It seems like any other stage, but I am the only one who knows, with the people around me, how difficult it is to work every day, to be physically and psychologically well, and to score this 900th goal. It is a unique stage in my career.” At 39, the Al-Nassr player is absolutely not thinking about retirement, but rather about his next records: “Records come naturally, as you know. And I don’t break records, it’s the records that haunt me. So I’m happy.”

Honored before the match by his former Madrid teammate Luka Modric, he was then paid tribute by his coach, Roberto Martinez. “It’s a very, very special occasion tonight, because scoring 900 goals is not easy. But I would like to highlight the example he sets. If Cristiano has scored 900 goals, it is thanks to his dedication to the national team and the work he does in training that no one sees. It is fantastic for the history of Portuguese football, for Cristiano and for world football, but it is also a great example for the dressing room,” said the Spaniard.
