Minister of Defense, Interior, Justice and Foreign Affairs under the presidencies of Jacques Chirac and then Nicolas Sarkozy, Michèle Alliot-Marie, 77, was sentenced on Friday, September 6 by the Nanterre Criminal Court. She was targeted for her alleged role in the payment of subsidies to an association chaired by her father during his term as deputy mayor of Saint-Jean-de-Luz from 2010 to 2012. Her lawyers have announced that they will appeal.

A former right-wing figure in the legal turmoil: Michèle Alliot-Marie, who many nicknamed “MAM” when she was a minister under Jacques Chirac and then Nicolas Sarkozy between 2002 and 2011, has just been sentenced by the Nanterre Criminal Court to 6 months of suspended imprisonment for illegal taking of interests. According to BFMTV, the facts she is accused of date back to the time when she was deputy mayor of Saint-Jean-de-Luz (Pyrénées-Atlantiques), between 2010 and 2012, and concern the payment of subsidies to an association then chaired by her father.

More than 260,000 euros paid out

The association, which organises a film festival, is said to have received more than €260,000 between January 2010 and October 2012 from the tourist office subsidised by the municipality, as well as €25,000 per year directly from the town hall. A judicial investigation was opened in 2013. As Le Monde points out, “MAM”, as part of his municipal mandate carried out alongside his duties as minister, participated “personally or by proxy” in votes on the budgets and target agreements of the tourist office. The investigators who looked into this case concluded that there had been an illegal taking of interests. Michèle Alliot-Marie’s lawyers have announced that they will appeal this decision.
