An announcement from the national meteorological agency.

Spain has just experienced its “hottest” August on record with an average temperature of 25 degrees, the national meteorological agency Aemet announced.

“August 2024 was the hottest month in the historical sequence in Spain”according to a message from the agency, posted on the social network X during the night from Monday to Tuesday.

With an average temperature of 25 ºC, it was 2 ºC above the 1991-2020 average. It was two-tenths higher than August 2003 and 2023, the warmest so far.

“It exceeded by two tenths those of August 2003 and 2023, the hottest so far”she adds.

The hottest year?

“The month began with the continuation of the long warm period that began on July 22 and ended on August 13, explains the weather agencywith the passage of the Dana which left torrential rains on the Balearic Islands. Then another secondary hot period occurred until the end of August“.

And Aemet concludes: “For now, based on data from January 1 to August 31, 2024 is positioned as the hottest year in the historical series, tied with 2022. Both years have an average temperature of 15.8 ºC. Closely followed by 2023 and 2020, with 15.7 ºC.” average.
