Rebecca Cheptegei is recovering from her serious injuries at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret, Kenya. The Ugandan athlete, who competed in the marathon at the Paris Olympics (July 26-August 11) last August, has suffered severe burns.

Her partner, Kenyan Dickson Ndiema Marangach, is suspected of having set her on fire, according to the local press. According to the first elements of the investigation, the alleged events occurred on Sunday, September 1, in the early afternoon.

Dickson Ndiema Marangach allegedly broke into Rebecca Cheptegei’s home. A violent argument then broke out. The man was armed with a 5-litre can of petrol, allegedly poured the liquid on the marathon runner and set it on fire.

According to another local source cited in particular by RMC Sport, Rebecca Cheptegei was burned 75%. Neighbors quickly intervened to put out the fire. Dickson Ndiema Marangach was also burned during the incident, he is also hospitalized.
