Iga Świątek entered the 4th round of this year’s US Open after victories over Kamilla Rakhimova, Ena Shibahara and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, respectively. In the quarterfinals, the Polish player’s opponent was Lyudmila Samsonova. The two women had already faced each other three times, and Świątek had always been better.

The opening set of Tuesday’s duel at Flushing Meadows was even. The Pole was very good in the service area and didn’t give Samsonova many chances to get close on the return. In the first set, the Russian didn’t have any break points, and only once did Świątek’s serve decide a game on advantage.

The Pole, on the other hand, had her first chances to break Samsonova when she was leading 2:1. However, the Russian defended two break points and got out of trouble. Then the game continued to go game by game, but when the competition entered a crucial phase, Świątek increased the pace, and Samsonova had a hard time keeping up. The result was a break for the Pole to zero and a 6:4 victory in the first set.

The second part of the match was an incredible display by Świątek, who made practically no mistakes. The Polish player’s game showed everything that was best, and above all, self-confidence and perfection. Samsonowa had nothing to say and did not know how to stand up to such a great playing leader of the world ranking.

Świątek dominated the second set and ultimately proved to be better in it with a score of 6:1, thus advancing for the second time in her career to the best eight of the New York Grand Slam. Previously, when the Pole found herself in this phase of the struggle at Flushing Meadows – in 2022 – she was already undefeated until the very end and won the title.

Świątek’s opponent in the quarterfinals will be Jessica Pegula. The players have faced each other nine times, with the Pole winning six times, including twice in the Grand Slams. In 2022 – also in the quarterfinals – Świątek defeated Pegula at Roland Garros and the US Open.
