The US Open has been fighting for places in the singles quarterfinals since Sunday. Americans can no longer keep their fingers crossed for Coco Gauff, because last year’s winner was eliminated in the fourth round. She was defeated by compatriot Emma Navarro. There is another American in contention for the title. Jessica Pegula played for the best eight with Diana Sznaider on Monday and was the favorite.

The American has already reached the quarterfinals of the US Open in 2022, so she could equal her career-best result in New York. The Russian, who is over a decade younger, made her debut in the third round of the US Open, and reaching the fourth round was a lifetime best.

The tennis players played each other quite recently for the first time in their careers. In August in Toronto, Jessica Pegula was better in two sets and in New York she wanted to prove her superiority over the Russian.

The American won the first set 6-4 on Monday, and she needed 48 minutes to do it. Half of the games were won by the receiving player. Jessica Pegula tried to break one more, moving away from 2-2 to 5-2 and did not waste the advantage.

At the beginning of the second set there were several long games, and the young Russian tried to change the course of the match. It was unsuccessful, and the marathon game ended with a break of Diana Sznaider’s serve and Jessica Pegula’s lead 2:1. From that moment on, the American was leading until the end of the match, which she won in a convincing way. The second set ended with the score 6:2.

The winner will play in the quarterfinals against the better tennis player in the match Iga Świątek with Ludmiła Samsonowa. The clash, with the participation of the Pole, will start at 1 a.m. from Monday to Tuesday.
