The facts –

“People across the country are grappling with the painful consequences of widespread conflict and devastating disaster. The deepening crisis has pushed many into survival mode,” the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said on 19 August regarding Myanmar. Internally, 3.3 million people have been displaced, many without adequate shelter in areas affected by fighting, such as the northern province of Sagaing. A possible fragmentation of the country could lead to a full-scale humanitarian crisis.

On Monday, the Southern Theater Command of China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) said it was sending troops to Ruili and Zhenkang — two regions in Yunnan that border Myanmar — to conduct patrols to ensure “the security and stability of the border areas.” On Tuesday, the provincial government of Yunnan in southwest China announced that the PLA would conduct live-fire drills for three days on its side of the border.
